Alfonso Burnett Jr is a 6-3 Point Guard from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He's currently a freshman at Susquehanna Township High School, and runs with Team Pennsylvania on the AAU circuit. I brought Burnett to my platform because of the growth that I've seen in him the past two years as a student-athlete. Throughout last year I heard of this one kid from my alma mater who was coming up in the area, from sources. Then I connected the dots together and realized that it was "Fonz", from who I was familiar with growing up inside the district. Getting back on topic, within the past two years I've seen progression within Burnett. From improving his grades in the classroom to becoming an offensive threat in David Archer's system, Burnett is starting to grasp a good feel for the game as a floor general. Despite the Indians missing the District 3 playoffs this past season, Burnett was named All-Conference in the Mid-Penn Capital division averaging around 15 points per game through 22 games. Burnett is expected to have a big summer with Team Pennsylvania under Dwan Lee, and a breakout sophomore season this winter. I caught up with Burnett on his freshman season, growth as a person and preparation for year two.
Alfonzo Burnett Interview
When did you start playing basketball?
"I started playing basketball around the age of 6."
Describe how you are as a player from the skill standpoint?
"I'm a very good team player. I try to get my teammates involved, but also go get a bucket when my team needs it. I have a high IQ, can finish at the rim and defend. Also, working on my jumper to get my shot my consistent."
How was your freshman season?
"My freshman season was good. It didn't go as planned, but just have to keep working. Averaged around 15 points per game with 4 steals and 6 rebounds. My goal was to just develop as a player throughout the year on the court, and in the classroom. I also, was given honorable mention by PennLive."
If I were you bro, I’d applaud yourself real quick. You turned it around in the classroom, and as a young man this school year. If you don’t mind, discuss your growth as a person as we’d love to hear it.
"My growth it's been huge man. From getting kicked off the team to coming back stronger then ever not letting anything get in my way. I was very immature not taking things serious, and realizing the talent that I have. I had a lot of inside stuff going on to which i won't really speak about. But people from the outside would speak about me, and paint a image that wasn't me at all. I felt that I just had to get right."
You’re still at a very early stage of your career. What kinds of things are you doing to make yourself the best player you can be?
"I'm at open gyms at the high school from 5 to 7 on Monday and Thursday nights. AAU practices are bi-weekly on Wednesdays. Also, doing my own workouts on the side."
What are your plans for this summer?
"I'm currently playing with Team Pennsylvania on the Hoop Group circuit. We just were at Pitt Jamfest, and A Game Hoops. Overall, we did okay but still have work to do to get better as team."
Which athlete do you look up to the most?
"I'm a big fan of DJ Wagner. I like his game, and take things out of his game to add them to mine."
Who do you look up to as role models?
"If being honest I don't look up to nobody."
Thank you for taking the time to talk with me this morning! Last but not least. what are you looking forward to in your sophomore season?
"I'm looking forward to win, and be more of a floor general. Doing whatever I have to do for my team to win. Also, going for All-State this year. I'm in grind mode right now, and ready to take on any challenge that is given to me."
