Hello, I am Tyreese Smith. I am a student-athlete, blogger and brand promoter. I have involved myself in writing, and making numerous blogs for the past couple of months to find a new hobby in my life. From a little idea in my head to writing on other platforms, I've used my creativity to showcase my writing ability and to help people get their names out in the world. I have written about other blogs, businesses, poetry, sports and now I'm looking to explore into my craft and find more ideas. In this article, I have been blessed to work with a very humble student-athlete from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She's a star on the rise who is looking to have a breakout junior season. Here is Caroline Shiery from Central Dauphin High School

Caroline Shiery is a 6 foot 3 Center/Power Forward from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She's an upcoming junior who attends Central Dauphin High School and plays with Advanced Hoops/Team Pennsylvania AAU Basketball. Caroline comes from a very tall family (Dad-6'7 and Mom-6'0) so the basketball genes were already installed in her. Caroline has put together a nice resume from this past season. Caroline is a Mid Penn Commonwealth First Team All-Star, Mrs. PA Top 5 Most Promising Underclassman, Prep Scene/Linglestown Gazette Sports “Fab 15' and was a part of the 2019-2020 Lady Rams team who were Mid Penn Conference and 6A District Champions. She currently holds offers from Campbell, Iona, Lafayette, Lenoir-Rhyne, Robert Morris, San José State and UMass. While off the court, Caroline loves to spend time with her family and friends. I've always heard great reviews of Caroline as a person and even had the chance to work with her last summer. Caroline is looking to continue her success in her junior season adding more moves to her game and looking to make noise once again with the CD Rams. She averaged 9.9 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.1 blocks last season.

BREAKDOWN

OFFENSE: Caroline Shiery is a very fundamental and aggressive post player. Caroline plays in a traditional way when posting up. She always makes sure she's low, calling for the ball and sealing her defender to make sure she has an opportunity to score. She has excellent footwork for a young post as she uses a lot of moves to shake her defenders off and elevates off the ground. She's a very unselfish player who always looks to find her teammates when facing a double team, or when they're open for a shot. Caroline also can step out of the paint and drill a mid range jumper every once in awhile. She's quick to set her feet up with an excellent release and elevates off the ground so a defender can't block her shot.

DEFENSE: Caroline is an aggressive defender with a great work ethic. She is very active in the paint and uses her tall stature to seal rebounds and block shots. Her aggressive antics have got her in foul trouble as times, but she's still working on becoming a complete defender as time goes on. Caroline averaged around 8.1 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game last season.

WEAKNESSES/IMPROVEMENTS: Caroline is looking to add more to her game to make herself more versatile. She's working on extending her shooting range, driving ability and ball handling in order to score at all three levels. Being in the paint is all that Caroline knows, but she wants to be known more as an all around threat. There aren't much weaknesses in her game, but the biggest things for Caroline to work on is her all around offensive game and getting stronger. Being tall gives you a huge advantage, but as the years go on you have to be able to build a frame. As she develops more of a physical presence then relying on height, I believe that Caroline will be a monster in her basketball career. Remember, Caroline is only a rising junior. She has a lot of upside and potential to become a division 1 basketball player. She has received several offers over, a member of an accomplished high school basketball program and plays under a great head coach in Randy Gambelunghe. Caroline will be successful in her basketball career because of her work ethic and aggressive, unselfish style of play. I asked Caroline a few questions so the audience can get to know her better.

Caroline Shiery Q&A

When did you first start playing Basketball?

  • "I did little camps and leagues when I was in elementary school, but nothing serious. In 6th grade, I tried out for my first AAU team and fell in love with basketball and have been playing ever since."

Describe your play style..

  • "I love being in the post. I’m definitely a very physical player and very vocal."

What is your role on Central Dauphin’s Basketball team?

  • "I am a scorer and rebounder."

Describe the feeling of receiving your first official offer this past winter.

  • "I really was not expecting it at all and it was an amazing feeling. I was so excited because it was kind of validation that everything I had been doing was paying off and that my dream of being a Division 1 athlete was possible."

How has the summer been for you?

  • "I have been working out a ton. I have been training a lot and making sure I am prepared for AAU and for the upcoming school season. I received my second D1 offer from Lafayette, an offer from Lenoir-Rhyne University and a few more schools. I also have been building relationships with a lot of really great colleges. It is an incredible experience and I am really blessed because a lot of people don’t get to experience the recruiting process."

Who’s an athlete that you look up to?

  • "I really look up to Elizabeth Cambage in her style of play and how she plays is really incredible. Also, she can dunk and I really want to dunk."

LOOK OUT, CAROLINE'S TAKING OFF SOON!!!

You’re still at a very early stage of your career. What kinds of things are you doing to make yourself the best player you can be?

  • "Staying in shape and getting in the best physical shape I can be is very important so I spend a lot of time in the weight room and on the track. I participate in any training and pickup game I can get into whether it is point guard training or post work I am constantly trying to expand my game and perfect moves so I can reach my full potential. Also, I do a lot of basketball training on my own and really focus on the basics because I feel like they are so often overlooked like drop steps, hook shots, form shooting, and things like that."

Which players or coaches do you think of as role models?

  • "My high school coach, Coach G, is such an incredible person to look up to and an amazing role model. He is so supportive and I really aspire to be as selfless and caring as him. Also, Coach Corey, he is constantly pushing me to become better and is a big part of the player I have become."

What do you value in friendships and relationships?

  • "I value someone who understands the life of an athlete and the constant grind. Also, someone with the same moral compass as me who will push me to become a better person."

What do you look for in a college?

  • I really look for a family atmosphere and a basketball program that fits me and my playing style. I’m not sure what I want to major in yet so that is not affecting my decision at the moment, but ultimately I am just looking for the right fit for me no matter the schools record or conference.

What are your expectations heading into your junior season?

  • "I expect to face a lot of good teams this season but our team has amazing potential this year to be really good and I think we can be a really strong team."

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for the people out there?

  • "Trust God and know that he has a plan."
