Camryn Halcovage is a 5’8” Combo Guard from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She’s a rising junior at Harrisburg Academy and runs with Team Pennsylvania on the AAU circuit. Halcovage, unfortunately, didn’t have a school season last year due to the coronavirus pandemic and her school canceling athletics. But Halcovage has been working on her game in the game every day, doing extra work off the court as this earned her a spot on my platform. Below is my interview Halcovage as she provided a lot of great professional answers!
CAMRYN HALCOVAGE INTERVIEW
When did you first start playing basketball?
“I started playing basketball when I was 11 years old.“
Describe your game.
“As a player, I use my height and my fairly long arms to help me. This helps me in multiple ways such as defensively. I am an athletic and swift player. I use this all to my advantage.“
With HBG Academy canceling the season due to the coronavirus pandemic, how was that period of time for you ?
“When my school made the decision to not play against other schools, I was devastated. I was upset that I would not be able to show my skills and play in games. I realized I could either practice and work hard to get better or not. It was such an easy decision. I was in the gym everyday, shooting, dribbling, working out, etc. It ended up being one of the most beneficial school seasons I have ever had.”
What is your role on Harrisburg Academy’s team?
“Currently, my role is to play point guard or where ever I am needed. My coaches have given me so many opportunities to play in different positions to help advance my game. I also think my role is to help my teammates grow on the court.“
Do you have any pregame routine?
“Honestly, I am usually listening to music or a podcast while dribbling and shooting. It gets me focused.“
How was the AAU season?
“My AAU season was great. I learned a lot of new skills and a lot about myself as a player. My team and I had a very successful season. One of my goals was to be more aggressive at the beginning on the game. I also had a goal to increase my shooting accuracy. With the help of my amazing teammates and coach, I was able to do so.”
What does your typical training schedule look like?
“Everyday I make it a goal to work hard and train hard. Before it gets hot in the morning, I shoot for between 1-2 hours in the driveway. After, I like to go on a 1.5 mile run around my neighborhood. Later, If I am not in the gym shooting again, I will do dribbling drills and workout in my basement. Normally, I will train at school with my school coach. He gives me workouts and drills to do at home when I am not in the gym. These drills and workouts take about 1-3 hours to complete. At night, I like to workout before bed. I do a 30 minute workout right before bed.“
You’re still at a very early stage of your career. What kinds of things are you doing to make yourself the best player you can be?
“To become the best player I can be, I have been focusing on fundamentals. I work very hard to make sure the basics of the game are great. I think fundamentals are skills that you can never practice too much. I also believe that while working on the basics, I can continue to add new, advanced skills to my game.”
Which athlete do you look up to the most?
“I probably look up to Magic Johnson the most. He had rough times in his life and struggled. Now, he is labeled as one of the best players the game has ever seen.”
Who would you say are your role models?
“I look up to my parents and my kindergarten teacher. My parents always believe in me and show me what it is like to be a great person. My kindergarten teacher, who was diagnosed with cancer, came to school even on days where she didn’t feel great. She always had a smile on her face. She always showed me that I can find the positive in any bad situation.”
It’s still very early, but what are you looking forward to in your junior season?
“In my junior season I really want to focus on defense and shot accuracy. I am hoping to play against tough opponents that allow me to advance my defensive and offensive skills. I have so many more goals, however, those are just the main two.”
Do you have any words of encouragement or motivation for people?
“I would say that you really can do anything. There’s always going to be people who don’t like you or who are rude to you, but just work hard and become successful. I also think that failure is always followed by success if you put your mind to it.”
